The Tiger Bowl: From Worst to First

Auburn and Missouri have both turned heads in the SEC. Who would have guessed by this time last year that both teams would be number 3 and 5 respectively in the final BCS Standings? Auburn comes into the game off of two emotional final second victories and Mizzou have downed quality opponents in the past couple of weeks to keep their spot in the SEC Championship game.

What To Watch For

James Franklin opened as starter for the 2013 season. Against Murray State on Aug. 31, 2013, Franklin finished with 318 yards passing and three touchdowns. He complete 26 of 38 passes. He also rushed six times for 44 yards. He was sacked once. Photo by Karen Mitchell.

OFFENSE

Missouri is a very balanced team. They have great receivers and two QBs in James Franklin and Maty Mauk that can step in an make play upon play. They can also run the ball. Missouri has 4 players over 500+ yards, like Auburn. Henry Josey leads the way with 988 yards and 13 TD. Another big factor in the in the SEC Championship game is the receivers for Mizzou. L'Damian Washington and Dorial Green-Beckham. they are both taller than 6'4 and are very physical. Marcus Lewis is there go to receiver between the 20's, but Washington and Green-Beckham always find the ball in the endzone and space. Missouri is 42nd in the country throwing the ball and 18th in the rush game.

DEFENSE

Auburn is going to have to stay focused and disciplined. The pass rush for Missouri has harassed opposing QBs all season long. Michael Sam has 10.5 sacks and seems like he is always in the backfield every play. The DB play for Missouri has also been high. E.J. Gaines has 4 INTs on the year and always has a hand in plays that come his way. Kentrell Brothers and Braylon Webb are both very well at defending their assignments. All there are among the leading tacklers for this Mizzou team. This defense allows only 119.1 yards a game, which is 14th best in the country.

What I'm Expecting

This is going to be a very physical game in the trenches. Expect Auburn to run the ball over and over and over. Alabama's rush defense had only allowed fewer than 108( which is their current opp. rush yards a game) before they came into Jordan-Hare where Auburn racked up 296. For Missouri, Sam needs to be in the backfield and hitting Nick Marshall. Not many teams have successfully brought him down inside the pocket. So when Auburn does throw the ball, Sam and the rest of the line have to pressure. The DBs need to stay disciplined to their assignments because Auburn WILL run the read option. With Missouri's top tacklers being DBs, they are going to make plays in the open field to keep Auburn from having chunk plays. They will bring pressure from blitzes and different looks, but if Auburn stays focused, I see many yards in the rushing game.

A Few Predictions

Auburn will rush for over 250.
Nick Marshall is elusive and fast. Once he gets a lane not many people can catch him. Tre Mason and Corey Grant will have their yards. Tre touches the ball often and well.

Marshall will throw the ball.
Auburn's rushing success will allow Marshall to throw TD passes in this one. The key is to not force passes or take sacks in the process. Marshall-2 TD passes.

Turnovers.
I can easily see both teams trying to do too much and having a turnover a piece. I understand that Missouri is 15+ in the turnover margin, but Auburn will play smart and both teams will have only one turnover a piece.

The score.
There will be points. Auburn and Missouri both rank among the top teams in scoring offense. With two QBs that can run, expect big rushing plays on either side and expect Missouri to throw the ball. Auburn's bend don't break philosophy is going to have to hold. Auburn's pass rush is very lethal. With the rotations and depth for Auburn, that can possibly pay dividends. This game is going to be close early. Auburn's offense and rushing will be the deciding factor. Missouri 28- Auburn 42 War Eagle!

It's hard to stay humble,
When we look at what got us here!!
We have overcome all adversity,
Fighting like champions without any fear!!

Last year our team seemed disconnected,
Playing as if all hope was gone!!
This year Miracles have been happening;
And we are headed to the Georgia dome!!

With the hurry up no huddle offense,
Many great things have happened so fast!!
AUBURN has risen to each occasion;
And made great memories that will last !!

We always take it one game at a time,
Pressing onward, we'll never stop believing!!
We are thankful for all our miracles;
But hard work is why we're achieving!!

Our journey is not yet over!!
There is still work to do!
We plan To claim the SEC Title this time!;
And MIZZOU We are coming for you!!!

The End Zone

You have to want it more, to get into the end zone. Photo by Todd Van Emst

 Some people may not agree or like everything in this blog. I am truly just sharing my heart and feelings here, so I do not at all want to start any back and forth or anything.

 I know this topic can be sort of questionable, but I truly believe in praying for the players. I know, I know, sometimes it can get a little 'squidgy' when we are praying for something that someone else is praying the opposite of.

 What I mostly want to pray for is the players themselves. Last year, I felt that the players had a heavy weight on them. I asked a few people to pray with me. I truly felt as if God urged me to pray for them as PEOPLE. Trust me it was much harder to be annoyed by a player's performance if I had been praying for that player that week!

  We worked out a rotation schedule based on the players numbers. If we found out something good had happened to one of the players, we would share it with one another. For instance, one or two of the players professed Christ. Another might have made a good grade on a test.

  For the longest time, I felt like prayers were not really being answered. I trusted that my fellow praying partners were holding up their end and praying for their players.  It seemed like the hits kept coming. Jay's mom died. Coach Chizik's mom died. The young man that was a student assistant died.  I remember asking God were the prayers in vain. It surely didn't seem like the prayers were helping.

 Jay Prosch lost his mother. He could have quit after last season. He did not. God has used this young man in amazing ways. God took a young man who lost his mom to cancer, then had a football season unlike any other in recent memory and turned him into an unstoppable force on the field. He is also a leader on this team.

 I should have known better. God said wait.

 The day after Coach Malzahn was hired, I remember meeting my carpool at 6:20 and seeing the most beautiful rainbow I had EVER seen in my life. Later in the day, a rainbow appeared over Jordan-Hare.  I will admit, I did not really keep up the praying. I prayed for them periodically but not nearly as regular.

 Our friend Klell was one of my prayer partners.  I think I told him after the Texas A &M game that God had spoken to me about the prayers last year.  I felt that God was telling me, 'Your prayers are never in vain, no matter how small. This season, God has said, 'Let me show you what I can do.'

 We've seen Shon Coleman return to the field after CANCER. Nothing is impossible with God.

 We've seen TWO crazy endings to games. We've had a team fight and win games with a quarterback that was thrown away from another team. We have a running back who is making a difference who was thrown away by another team or at least put in the back of the pantry.

  I mentioned in my blog after the Georgia game how much I love the movie Facing the Giants. I used the quote "A miracle has occurred here tonight!"

 There is a scene in that movie where the coach has a player death crawl blindfolded with another player on his back. The coach asks him to go to the 50 from one end zone. He blindfolds the player. He pushes him.

 "Don't give up until you have nothing left!"

The player continues. He tells the coach it hurts. He can't do anymore. Finally, he drops.

"I gotta be at the 50."

"Look up, Brock. You're in the end zone."

 This team has worked. They have fought. They have prevailed. They have trusted the coach. They have healed. Maybe they aren't completely healed, but they are healing. They have pushed and pushed when they weren't sure where they were or where the coach was taking them.

 Our players are working to get into the end zone. We want, and they want a little more.  Sometimes, our prayers are answered in a way that is better than we can imagine. He might say, 'not right now' or it may seem like the answer is no, or we are simply being ignored.

 Look up, Auburn. You are streaking toward the end zone. How bad do you want it?
