Coordinator Talk

After what many are calling a successful spring for the Auburn Tigers I wanted to take a closer look at what the two coordinators have to say about some of the players and the actual progress made.

First let's start with the offense. Rhett Lashlee is in charge of the Auburn offense. Let's face it, it's Gus Malzahn's offense, but nobody knows it better than Lashlee.

This offense has proven it can score points on the best defenses in the country. Getting better and faster will create even more nightmares for those who have to plan to stop it.

Defensively, Coach Malzahn made the call to start over with a different philosophy. Will Muschamp was tabbed to improve Auburn's defense. Muschamp is a proven coach with a tremendous resume' and head coaching experience.

Auburn's defense has only had the spring to learn new terminology, and apply the new system to their play on the field. For such a short time, the change was evident. That change defensively was well received by the Auburn family.

Over the summer the Tigers need to keep developing chemistry. They need to work on the fundamentals. Most of all, they need to stay out of trouble, and avoid the injury bug. I have a feeling this off-season, we won't be disappointed.

Reflections of Spring

"The heartbeat of a football team is the quarterback position and I think everyone who has any intelligence about the game understands you must have consistency at that position to be a championship team" - Ron Jaworski

No the two top QB's were not "live" on the field Saturday as Auburn executed it's annual A Day game. Some of the throws would have been made that were called sacks, and some of the passes would never have seen the light of day in a real game scenario. However, all of Auburn's QB's looked really good, and that is a wonderful thing to see. Offensively.

After working hard for three years at Auburn, Jeremy Johnson has been named the starting QB for the 2015 season. In his three starts at Auburn, Jeremy Johnson has been a model of consistency.

Jeremy will excel in this offense. He already has. His 73% completion rate and near NFL caliber arm are just two of the reasons that Johnson has been given the keys to the "Gus Bus."

"Everyone has a plan, until they've been hit" - Joe Louis

The Will Muschamp effect was on full display during Auburn's spring game last Saturday. An audible difference in the meeting of defender and ball carrier was evident.

There wasn't any diving at the feet of an offensive player. There wasn't any one man on an island, left to save the day. It was an all out attack.

"Competition brings out the best. We'll see what happens." - Gus Malzahn

There are still many concerns about this Auburn team. Defensive secondary depth being foremost.

Josh Holsey is probably the most steady defensive back. His cover skills are very good. We know what Jonathan Jones can do when healthy. The addition of Tray Mathews is a huge plus. Rudy Ford has been praised by players and coaches alike.

These guys will need some quality depth behind them. It is incumbent that someone steps up and becomes that dependable "go to guy" at each of these positions.

Overall, it was a great spring.

"Looking at the scrimmage, I think our guys played extremely hard on both side of the ball," Malzahn said. "We played everybody, kind of mixed and matched. The effort was good, the attitude was good, and that was kind of our message throughout the spring. We came out of this this thing with no major injuries, and that's always a very positive thing from a head coach's stand point. Overall, I like where we're at and I think it was a very successful day." - Gus Malzahn

September 5th, 2015 can't get here soon enough.

Never Give Up: AU vs UA Game 3 Highlights

Auburn Gymnastics: Here to Win

Coach Jeff Graba came to Auburn with a plan. Build from the ground up, a program that can compete nationally, and win championships. Not an easy task knowing a perennial powerhouse was just 160 miles away, and the Tigers #1 rival.

It may be difficult to maintain a rivalry when the win/loss column is so heavily tilted, but this is Auburn and Alabama we are talking about.

Although Auburn did not beat their rival this season, the groundwork has been laid. No less than 15 school records were set or broken this season by a talented, yet young gym squad. The best is yet to come.

Congratulations to the Auburn Gymnastics team, Coach Jeff Graba, and his staff on a terrific year.

All the Good Things

Recently, the sports world lost one of its greatest members. Lauren Hill showed the world everything that is good and right about college sports. I will always remember seeing her story for the first time. I do not think at that time I could fathom how strong she was. I still don't think I really can. She showed extreme courage every single day.  When CBS did the story to announce her death, there was a look back on the things she had done, including playing in a basketball game and raise a ton of money (but not at the same time).  It was an amazing thing to see. I am so glad that the right decisions were made to allow that game to happen early so she could play. I wish I could have been there. That can be something that her teammates can tell their grandchildren about.  I do not know a single person that would have rooted against her. That last story is always the best one on the news.

My point is so much of the time, we hear about everything negative about college or pro athletes. We hardly ever hear about the good things, like Warrick Dunn helping single moms buy houses, Cam Newton mentoring kids, or the things that Peyton Manning gives money and time. Stories attract more attention when they are about guns, drugs or alcohol. We as a society do not spend enough time on the people like Lauren , who make a difference where they can.

Lauren looked for the good every day. She found a place where she could make a difference and she did it.  We all need an ounce of the courage and goodness that she had. I think the world is absolutely a better place  because she was in it. That day - that game- showed everything that is good and perfect about sports of all levels. Thank you, Lauren for the things you did in your short time on this planet. If I can make a tenth of an impact that you did,  I would know that I did the things that I needed to do. Let's start tomorrow and do something good where we can. Do it for Lauren because she did it for us.

Quarterback Lesson: Be Ready At All Times

Keys to being ready for any backup Quraeterback are simple. Keep your head in the game.

In 1993 Auburn faced a 4th down with the odds stacked against them. Their starting QB Stan White had just been sacked by the Alabama defense. Trotting onto the field without any time to warm up, Patrick Nix, a Red-shirt Sophomore faced what some described as impossible odds. He was a sacrificial lamb trotted onto the field of slaughter in the most heated rivalry in all of sports. The Iron Bowl!

His head coach, Terry Bowden, knew Pat had zero time to warmup. The adjustments were made. The primary receiver was moved to the short side of the field, and the play call was to lob the pass upwards, and let the Auburn receiver make the catch.

It worked to perfection.

Fast forward to just last season. Ohio State went through the entire season with not just one QB getting hurt, but both the starter and the backup were injured.

As the team made the college football playoffs, nobody gave them a chance to win vs. Alabama
yet that is what happened. Then it was expected that the 3rd string signal caller would crumble at the pressure of the National Championship game. Nope.

Ohio State went on to win it all with 3 different QB's starting during the season and post season.

Auburn's presumed starter will be Jeremy Johnson. We have even stated that the job is his to lose. Yet, what many do not realize is that our Tigers have a very talented and capable man challenging Jeremy for the starting job. His name is Sean White.

Sean won the MVP in the Jon Gruden Quarterback "Elite Eleven" Quarterback camp and competition.

The Auburn QB's should be acutely aware of this. After all, they are just one play away from winning it all.
